THE CHALLENGE

A narrative-driven game needed 40+ hours of branching dialogue and story content with meaningful player agency — where choices had genuine consequence and character relationships evolved believably across the full game arc.

The studio had a strong world concept and visual direction but no narrative framework capable of handling the scope. Branching narrative at this scale becomes unmaintainable without rigorous structural design — and writing quality tends to collapse in branches that players are unlikely to see, creating jarring tonal inconsistencies.

THE SOLUTION

I designed a narrative architecture using a "spine and branch" model — core story beats maintained across all paths with branch content mapped to character relationship states rather than binary choices. This made the narrative maintainable, consistent, and responsive to player behavior in ways that felt organic rather than mechanical.

The system used 7 relationship variables tracked per major character, with dialogue and events dynamically selected based on variable states. This reduced unique content requirements by 40% while increasing perceived player agency. I wrote over 200,000 words of content across the full narrative.
